‘Shadows On The Grass’ Garden Sculpture

Opens on Saturday May 4^th 2019

The exhibition will run throughout the year.

After the rigours of winter we look forward to longer days, balmy evenings and with Summer around the corner our thoughts are turning to our gardens. With this in mind we will be opening our annual garden sculpture exhibition ‘Shadows On The Grass’, showing the work of talented British designer/makers in a variety of media.

New to the gallery for 2019 is Andrew Roache, retired veterinary surgeon, with a keen eye to animal anatomy. Most of his work is intended for outdoor display so is life-size or larger. He favours iron resin because it lends itself well to animal subjects and each cast matures in an interesting and individual way.

Paul Bearman, another new exhibitor, has created a collection of lively animal pieces for the garden in rugged cement fondue with a copper paint finish. Paul was born in London and studied sculpture at the City and Guilds of London Art School.

Ann Campbell’s ceramic sculpture reflects her lifelong interest in animals. Without sentimentality but with acute observation based on empathy she represents animals and birds as archetypes of themselves. The sheep, birds, baboons, zebras and horses formed in Ann’s studio have a presence of playful solemnity, a gravitas and grace that derives from Ann’s experience and love of animals.

Toff Milway throws salt glazed garden pots. He has developed his own pottery style and an increasing diversity of Salt-glaze techniques which include dipping, pouring and trailing liquid clay slips, with scraffito and roulette decoration on to a very fine Ball clay based body.

David England carves in Portland and Forest Of Dean stone. His collection of original work will include the ever favourite Green man design.

Several artist blacksmiths will be showing a collection of their latest work in forged iron and stainless steel, where the visitor will discover green men, poppies, ferns, dandelions, sheep, herons, owls, kingfisher, humming birds as well as abstract pieces, those with a practical bent will find garden furniture, garden arch and plant supports. Some will be galvanised to protect them from the weather and some will feature hand blown glass.

Finally, long established sculptor Helen Sinclair produces limited edition and unique contemporary sculpture in stone resin.

Each piece of garden sculpture is designed to give hours of pleasure to enhance time spent in the garden.

‘Song Of The Earth’ Spring Exhibition 2019 Opens on Saturday March 2nd

Encompassing a unique collection of hand picked, desirable, contemporary British fine art and craft including watercolours, textile collage, ceramic sculpture, painted wood and silver jewellery. Each piece inspired by nature, we hope this latest exhibition strikes a heartening mood of optimism.

Heading the line up is self taught textile artist Barbara Shaw, who creates art using fabric like paint to construct her magnificent collage pictures. By hand-stitching or bonding many small pieces of fabric together in layers. She uses patterned and tactile materials in vibrant or subtle colours are useful as well as chiffon ribbons for shading, sparkly fabric for light, lace for intricate detail and tweed for texture all help to bring the artwork alive.

Northumberland-based artist, Mary Ann Rogers, paints vibrant watercolour paintings full of energy, from an in-depth knowledge of her subject matter. Her studio is surrounded by the wild hills of Northumberland, whose inhabitants, along with her own menagerie of birds, feature in her work. Mary Ann’s work is highly collectable and she was warded ‘Best selling published artist’ by the Fine Art Trade Guild in 2009.

Rhys Partridge Herefordshire painter and printmaker, gained his degree in Fine Arts at University College, Falmouth.

He finds inspiration from his local environment where he is firmly rooted. He focuses on nature, British birds and wildlife.

We will show a collection of hand printed linocuts, all executed with precision and attention to detail.

Jemima Jameson paints in acrylics on wood panels, mainly oak and olive wood and occasionally furniture. Her desire to paint and draw has been part of her whole life and is quite simply a celebration of the natural world that she is compelled to describe.

Karin Celestine, fibre artist, writer and illustrator from Monmouthshire, has created a delightful collection of needle felted creatures from hares to badgers to robins, each one with its own charm, character and mischief. She can happily turn her hand to making all creatures great and small, mythical as well as real.

Ceramic artist Elaine Peto graduated from Exeter College of Art & Design in 1985, where she studied animals via livestock markets and the abattoir, using the media of photography and drawing to record the structure of the carcass. Each animal is individually made by the process of slab building in clay, rolling out a sheet of clay and forming the body, then gradually adding slab by slab to form the whole animal. The details are then remodelled until the animal is complete. It is then biscuit fired, glazed and re-fired to stoneware.

Finally, no exhibition would be complete without a gorgeous range of jewellery and Hannah Willow has created her new collection of silver jewellery, combining semi-precious stones with mythical tales of nature.

Winter Exhibition 2018 ‘Fire and Frost’ opens on Saturday November 10

The Winter Exhibition 2018 at Old Chapel Gallery, Pembridge entitled ‘Fire & Frost’ opens on Saturday November 10 with a dazzling collection of hand picked, hand made delights! Give the High Street a miss this Christmas and shop for unique British made presents in the calm and tranquil atmosphere of the gallery. Enjoy a truly delightful shopping experience.

Artist Karen Pearce will be showing a new series of small landscape paintings in mixed media and Vivienne Cawson’s beautiful floral paintings in watercolour will give you a sense of warmer days.

Stained glass artist Tamsin Abbott has been busy creating some new panels in gorgeous colours including artwork of bonfires, badgers and butterflies.

Large pencil drawings of hares by Jackie Morris will compliment her range of limited edition prints taken from the ever popular Lost Words book which we continue to have in stock along with Jackie’s range of children books.

Jemima Jameson will show wall panels and boxes of hares, ravens, autumn berries and wild flowers.

Ruth Gibson will be showing a new collection of ceramic wall art and porcelain jewellery. Ruth is a potter, printmaker and photographer. She combines her expertise to present imaginative pieces for the wall and table.

There will be a humorous collection of ceramic and driftwood Hang Ups by Shirley Vauvelle including angels and fairies to adorn your Christmas tree!

We will have new collections of jewellery by Rachel Bailey, Alison Varley, Hannah Willow, Leoma Drew, Shirley Smith, Gail Klevan, and Rozie Keogh, who will also be showing a magnificent angel in wire with sequins.

We will continue to show the work of artist printmaker Colin See-Paynton, who will be showing a series of framed wood engravings.

We will be featuring a cornucopia of wonderful Christmas present ideas from the best of British artists and makers, many from Herefordshire and beyond – something for everyone! Including handmade cards, candles and soaps, Christmas tree decorations in copper, brass, glass and porcelain, jewellery in silver, acrylic, pearls and semi-precious stones, studio glass and stained glass, ceramics – functional and decorative, ironwork – including pokers, tongs, snuffers and candle holders, bronzes, sculpture – both for inside and the garden, original paintings, prints, including limited edition etchings and photographs, a wide range of textiles to include jackets, hats, scarves, gloves, cushions and throws. To keep out the winter chill there will be a ‘must have’ collection of scarves, wraps, collars and bags in lambs wool and Nuno felted merino wool with silk fibres by Kathie Barrs, all desirable accessories for any ladies wardrobe!

There will also be chunky sweaters for men in lambs wool and silk, felted lambs wool jackets in a fabulous collection of colours for women and new winter collections from our regular British designer/makers including a new collection of lambswool cardi’s and sweaters, hats and gloves, made in Scotland by Eribe Knitwear.

‘Caught In Flight’ Autumn and h.Art Exhibition 2018

As the first cool nights and the fluting of robins signal the flight of summer, we mark the beauty of the changes of the season, looking ahead to the cosy comforts of the home, and introduce our special combined h.Art and Autumn exhibition entitled ‘Caught In Flight’ which opens on Saturday September 8 at Old Chapel Gallery, Pembridge, promoting the work of talented British artists and makers from around the county and beyond.

Our h.Art line up will showcase Carolyn Amos, who studied silversmithing and jewellery at Harrow College of Art and Technology, designs and makes a collection of bold, crisply geometric earrings, rings and cufflinks from silver and coloured resin. Jennifer Hall, now working on the stunning North Pembrokeshire coast, uses traditional techniques to create contemporary slipware, aiming ‘to enhance the daily rituals of refreshment and mealtimes. As a maker of domestic ware, I do not want my pots to challenge, but to sit comfortably in the hand and feel soft on the lips.’ Her ‘Circle’ range, a very abstracted plant design, is influenced by the seed pods and structures of Honesty. Herefordshire based Kathie Barrs, felt maker, creates functional and decorative pieces with an array of textures. Cosy felt collars and scarves of vibrant coloured wools are marbled together with silk, clasped and buttoned with fastenings of English woods. Living locally, Hilary Mee’s chosen medium is papier mache, that ‘lends itself to being humorous and childlike, the application of colour and line giving a piece a more dramatic and theatrical air.’ Her lively pieces include jewellery, clocks, mirrors and ornaments. The dynamic garden sculptures of internationally acclaimed Herefordshire artist blacksmith Neil Lossock take inspiration largely from nature, interspersed with a love of the fantastic. Neil’s signature pieces – large, individual pieces of art that elicit admiration – are testament to his skill. Herefordshire artist Helen Cass’s selection of mono-prints stems from her documentation of the dissolution of the farm which has been an important presence in her work for twenty years, whose activities, processes and objects are now subject to change. Each print is an original, the plants themselves, collected while walking the land, make the image, forming superimposed silhouettes.

Complementing this exhibition will be artist Sue Hayden who will be showing a new collection of striking seascapes and landscapes in acrylic. Excited by the relationship between texture, shape, light and space, she paints with acrylic and pastels in a layered technique, creating a collage effect, adding energy, randomness to her work. Alongside Clio Graham’s enchanting pottery is designed to be functional as well as decorative and follows in the tradition of English slip ware, using the warm colours and qualities of earthenware with contemporary decoration, often influenced by the countryside. Her pieces, depicting flora and fauna, including swallows, owls and kingfishers, are framed with lines of poetry. Familiar birds such as blue tits, rooks and warblers feature in Kay Leverton’s magical scraper-board originals, in which she explores her love of line and detail and the intricacy of the natural world: ‘To scratch away the ink and reveal the creamy chalk underneath, to make up a work out of thousands of tiny lines, this really excites me.’

The Summer Exhibition “Summer Solstice” opens on Sunday July 8 2018

The Summer Exhibition at Old Chapel Gallery, Pembridge, entitled “Summer Solstice” opens on Sunday July 8 2018 and will feature a collection of new work to inspire and excite collectors and appreciators of fine art and quality craft.

Textile artist Rachel Wright returns after a very successful exhibition with us last year. She takes her inspiration from landscapes and cityscapes and has a particular love of the sea, harbour towns, boats and lighthouses. The shapes, colours and details are then borrowed and echoed in delicately hand or machine embroidered fabric collages, using vibrant threads, worked onto papers and fabrics. The signature skies in her landscapes are often dramatic and expressive.

Artist illustrator Jackie Morris, famous for her illustrations in the highly acclaimed Lost Words book, will be showing originals painted in sumi inks of otters and her “otter alphabet” along with new linocuts and limited edition prints.

Gail Klevan’s acrylic designer jewellery is bold, colourful, contemporary and perfect statement jewellery for long summer days and nights. Comfortable to wear; each piece is individually hand-crafted and no two pieces are alike. Gail is a graduate of the Royal College of Art in London and is one of the foremost UK designers working in acrylic.

Artist Kate Lycett sees patterns in everything. Her textile design background is always present in the way that she paints and interprets what is around her: from hills adorned with houses and washing lines, to rows of flower pots and stripes of brightly painted drain pipes. Kate incorporates gold thread trace lines through the landscape, and gold leaf changes the surface of her pictures with the changing light of day. She paints beautiful pictures of the places that she loves. We will be showing a new collection of hand embellished limited edition prints.

Ever popular Shropshire artist Jemima Jameson paints in acrylics on oak and olive wood panels, hand made wooden boxes and cupboards, much sought after as heirlooms of the future. Her inspiration comes from the rolling hills, farmland and woods that surrounds her and her work is a celebration of the natural world incorporating both flora and fauna.

Originally from Scotland, artist Lindsey Keir specialises in painting with a variety of oil and water based media using, when appropriate, high-lights of gold leaf and metallic inks as decorative elements. She studied at Glasgow school of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. She draws inspiration from the natural world using strong colour, pattern and texture. The richness in her paintings reflect her designers eye. She transforms everyday familiar objects with a powerful romantic language using strong colour and texture.

Ceramicist Kirsti Brown is inspired by her love of wandering, drawing and daydreaming by the coast. She hand builds ceramic vessels influenced by the sea, beaches and cliffs around Wales and Scotland. The decoration evokes shorelines, waves and landscape featuring her distinctive vivid turquoise glaze.

Last but not least, we will be showing a small collection of porcelain pieces by Justine Allison. Since leaving college in 1998 Justine has been working solely with hand built porcelain – creating semi-functional pieces. Her work addresses the boundaries between function and decoration. She looks at objects that are used on a daily basis; like the form of a jug and create pieces that move away from function and are more concerned with the aesthetic and the visual. Her work is very much concerned with the simplicity and beauty of the clay and incorporating pattern and texture as well as glaze and coloured porcelain to create subtle, unique variations. Thinness and movement are very important in each piece.

Hay Festival Exhibition @ Old Chapel Gallery 2018

A special Festival Exhibition at Old Chapel Gallery, Pembridge, to run during the Hay Festival of Literature and the Arts 2018, opens on Thursday May 24, continuing to the end of June and features the work of talented British artists and makers from far and near.

Heading the line up will be artist Jackie Morris, famous for her illustrations in children books and more recently for the award-winning ‘The Lost Words’, in which she collaborated with Robert McFarlane, a collection of ‘spells’ with words from the natural world that the junior Oxford Dictionary had removed…Jackie studied at Hereford College of Arts and at Bath Academy.

There will be a tempting new collection of stained glass from ever popular artist Tamsin Abbott whose work is influenced by our ancient land and how we are connected to it: the hills, the woods, the plants, birds and animals that live alongside us and the world of myths and fairytales that we have spun around it.

Artist and jeweller Hannah Willow, whose inspiration comes from the land, wild and free places, stories and folklore, poetry and myth and legend, strives to capture the hidden memory held within the landscape and spark rememberings that will connect us back to our deepest roots when creating her silver jewellery and mixed media paintings.

Lisa Ellul will be showing a new range of ceramic sculptural vessels. She has always been fascinated by the complex and beautiful natural structures and textures found in plants, bark, seed pods, corals and shells. Lisa studied Three Dimensional Design at the Manchester Metropolitan University specialising in ceramics and then went onto study ceramics at Blaker College in Norway.

Ceramicist Paul Taylor uses ultra thin slabs of white earthenware to create his latest collection of vessels and jugs that are glazed on the inside in fabulous colours.

There is an ever-changing collection of unique garden sculptures to enhance your outdoor space in a variety of media such as stoneware, forged iron, stainless steel, glass and more including the work of several sculptors new to the gallery.

‘Dance of Spring’ the Spring Exhibition 2018

‘Dance of Spring’ the Spring Exhibition 2018 at Old Chapel Gallery opens on Sunday March 4th and continues to the end of April.

Encompassing a unique collection of hand picked, desirable, contemporary British fine art and craft including paintings, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery and automata.Each piece inspired by nature and the awakening of Spring, we hope this latest exhibition strikes a heartening mood of optimism.

Artist Sue Hayden is featuring in our Spring Exhibition with a glorious new collection of seascapes painted whilst on location in Pembrokeshire. Sue is excited by the relationship between texture, shape, light and space in landscapes and paints with acrylics and pastels on paper that have been layered up beforehand with paint and paper creating a collage effect. This adds energy, randomness and interest to the subject. Her work is created from sketches and notes based on her impressions of what she is looking at and feeling. She rarely refer to photographs.

Ceramacist Ruth Gibson combines her love of photography, printmaking and ceramics, to create dramatic and bold screen-printed bowls and wall art in black and white, as well as soft greens and blues.
Porcelain has a warm soft quality, reflecting light, and when polished, the surface is very tactile, which particularly lends itself to jewellery making and small delicate bowls.

Mono-prints by Helen Cass, new to the gallery, born in Ludlow, Helen explores variations of deceptively simple abstracts made from criss-crossed lines in ink creating shimmering concoctions of blacks, whites and greys. She has used both digital and camera-less photography, as well as printmaking techniques such as dry-point etching and monotype to create her minimalist works of art. For this exhibition she has based her work on plant life and introduced some colour. Her work will be available framed and unframed.

Jane Charles glass blower, creates a wide range of exquisite sculptural pieces, perfume bottles, paperweights, bowls and vases. Each piece is unique, free blown in 24% lead glass. Once cooled the glass is cut, ground, polished, sandblasted and engraved by hand.

We will be showing new collections of interesting automata and jewellery to compliment this exhibition alongside new collections of ceramics by our favourite potters!

This exhibition continues until the end of April. The gallery is open daily. 11 am – 5 pm and Sundays from 11am – 4pm. Tuesday’s by appointment
