Frances was born and educated in London, and was a student at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, from 1965 until 1969.
The emphasis is on traditional technique and the highest standards in printing, instilled at the Slade and strengthened through experience and which remains constant in her work.
Etching is an intaglio method. A metal (usually copper, zinc or steel) is covered with a waxy ground which is resistant to acid. The artist then scratches their image into the ground with a pointed etching needle, exposing the metal plate beneath.
The plate is immersed in a bath of acid. Any area where the ground has been removed will expose the plate to the acid which will begin to etch or dissolve it away. The longer a plate is left in acid, the deeper the acid will ‘bite’ therefore the deeper the line that is created. Once the plate has been etched it is removed from the acid and washed thoroughly. Then the remaining ground is removed.
The plate is inked all over and then the ink wiped off the surface so that it only remains within the etched lines. The plate is put through a high pressure printing press together with a sheet of paper. The paper picks up the ink from the etched lines and the print is created.
