Deborah Poole is a textile craft artist now living in Buckinghamshire. She was born in the West Country but moved away to pursue a teaching career specialising in Textile design. Whilst studying for an M.A., she decided to develop felt making in studio practice and now specializes in decorative wall pieces.
Her basic materials which she uses for the textural qualities, are English and Merino wool. Her compositions are created by wool mixing and layering dyed fibres in a ‘painterly’ way to achieve figurative or stylized designs. The hand processing stages of hardening and milling later produce an image embedded in textile form. Inspiration comes from patterns of growth in gardens, the natural landscape, especially flora. She often makes sketch studies of plants in pastels or pencil to develop designs, influenced by the vitality and beauty of local scenery and to capture her response to rhythms of nature in an expressive use of colour and line reflecting light on form. The Hand felted art works hang framed or are free hung.
