Back in 2005, Kathie began thinking about taking early retirement from her career as classroom teacher and co-ordinator for the arts, and started looking for a creative activity that would both challenge and fascinate her – and along came wool!
She has been fortunate in having had many opportunities to learn and work alongside renowned felt making tutors from all over the globe, and she is grateful for their skill, patience and generosity. Every one brings something new to each individual’s experience of felt making, and the inspiration and motivation gained from each workshop was invaluable.
She is a member of the International Felt Makers Association, and completed her level 2 City and Guild qualification in Design and Textiles (Felt) at Felt in the Factory in 2015, where she now teaches workshops.
Felt is one of the oldest fabrics in existence. It’s incredibly versatile and can be as delicate as a cobweb or as strong as a yurt. Kathie loves the felting process: the whole activity is a never-ending exploration of colour and texture, with each project defining it’s own possibilities and directions. It’s a dynamic process…..rolling, beating, scrubbing, throwing, sculpting, stretching, soaping, dripping….the felt maker’s mantra!
One of the other artistic pursuits she enjoys is drawing:
“I’m married to a fine art painter and in 2001 we were fortunate enough to be able to spend a year in Florence, Italy, studying drawing full time at the Florence Academy of Art.”
