After contemplating a career in Forestry and Woodland Management, whilst studying Environmental Science, Ben realised that in order to create a sustainable future for British woodlands, their value needed to be increased, both financially and in the public consciousness. He decided that the best way for him to achieve this was by making ecologically responsible products from them. He then dedicated the next five years to studying, researching and workshop training to become a Designer Craftsman.
Ben attained a City & Guilds in Handmade Fine Furniture, a Higher National Diploma and Degree in Furniture Design and Craftsmanship, and gained experience in both traditional and contemporary techniques with regionally and internationally renowned makers.
During his five years training he worked for Bill Illston, a traditional Cabinet Maker with over 50 years experience; Rupert Williamson, an internationally acclaimed ‘Art Furniture’ maker; and later a summer working with Alan Powell, Architectural Joiner, who also has over 50 years experience. He has also assisted Mike Abbott and Gudrun Leizt in setting up their green woodworking workshop in Clissett Wood, Herefordshire.
