Originally Victoria trained as a textile designer at Falmouth School of Art and went on to work in the textile industry. In the 1980’s she studied printmaking at Hereford College of Art and more recently at West Dean College and the Sidney Nolan Trust.
Since becoming a printmaker her work has become more illustrative, incorporating her love of pattern and texture, stylisation and fluidity of line, which have always been important elements in her designs. Her subject matter is often influenced by classic legends, sometimes sparked by a line in a poem, a fairy tale, a chance remark or just ‘out of the blue’; and still featuring natural forms including animals, birds and mythical beasts.
She uses several printmaking techniques including: etching, screen printing, wood engraving, linocut and collagraph, Victoria’s preferred medium to create exquisite limited edition work.
Collagraph is the technique of adding a variety of materials to a card or metal base, which is then inked and printed in either intaglio or relief. The card is often cut in order to obtain the desired effects. Assiduous cleaning of the plate before printing is essential and the most time-consuming part of the process.
Victoria has drawn from a very early age (even on the fly pages of her fathers’ valuable first editions – much to his horror). She worked in the textile industry for the United Turkey Red Company, and later designed kaftans and shirts for Mr Fish of Clifford Street, as part of the 1960s ‘Peacock Revolution’ in men’s fashion design. Victoria began silk painting in the late 1970s as an extension of her textile background, the brilliant dye colours suiting her highly decorative style, which typically features animals, birds and mythical beasts.
She has exhibited widely in Great Britain and my work is in private collections throughout Europe and also in Australia, Canada and the U.S.A.
