Originally from Bath, Sarah gained a Three-Dimensional Design degree in 1986 from Bristol Polytechnic. Having worked in exhibition design, graphics and interpretation signage for nearly 20 years, her desire to go 3-D again led to studying Applied Arts at NEWI, North Wales. She then set up her glass workshop in North Shropshire not far from the Welsh border. This beautiful countryside and the diverse UK coastline provide constant inspiration – living within allows the ambience of the natural world to seep inward.

Glass is a fascinating and, at times, frustrating material to work – it can be transparent, translucent, opalescent, reflective, iridescent, light-catching, eye- catching and unpredictable. This is why Sarah finds it so captivating. Her work is a combination of imagination, creativity, experience and alchemy!

Sarahs glass landscapes/seascapes are made using an amalgamation of transparent and opalescent sheet glass, hand-made rolled glass, frits (small crushed, angular glass used for the pebbles) and powdered glass. For the foreground she specifically looks for chemical reactions between certain colours which gives an unpredictability to the outcome. She constructs the artworks in layers (like a jigsaw) then heat in a kiln to around 780c. When cooled the artworks are cold-worked (grinding and sand-carving) which peels back the layers to reveal the finished piece which is often a surprise to her. The shine of the glass is removed which gives an extra depth to detail and colour, leaving a weathered texture similar to sea glass. The glass is then sealed and mounted/framed. All in all there are 6 processes to produce each unique piece of art.
