The Doward  is a big hill just over the border into Herefordshire. It has an Iron Age Hill Fort at the top and is covered in ancient woodland and conifers.  It is owned by the Woodland Trust. There is lots of wildlife up there and has a great atmosphere and not at all busy so it’s lovely and peaceful. The River Wye runs around it at the bottom of the hill.

Inspired by the landscapes of the Welsh Borders. Looking through bluebells and grasses on The Doward up to the top of the hill. Lynda wanted to use the unusual gold/yellow light  to get across the strong, rather heavy atmosphere and sense of new vegetation growing in a wild and undisturbed environment high up on a hill.

Lynda was born in Sunderland in 1970, settling in Monmouth in the early 1980’s, where she has lived ever since. She studied Art Foundation at Newport College of Art & Design, followed by a degree in Visual Art at The University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

She worked for a number of years in a non art related business, always painting in her spare time. In 2007 she finally gave up her day job and started painting full time.

Her canvases are mostly depictions of landscapes in the Monmouth area – the final image often bears little relation to the original subject but all have a common starting point – the memory of a place she knows well.
