Pam’s work is informed by the rural, urban and coastal landscapes of North Yorkshire where she lives and works. Areas of the Northumberland coastline are also an important source of inspiration, providing an environment full of diverse and exciting colours, textures, wildlife and nature.
Inspired by buildings and architectural details such as turrets, domes and weathervanes, composition and colour are used to suggest mood and narrative. Close observation of the birdlife and seasonal changes in the landscape also inform her work.
Pam’s printmaking practice focuses on creating original linoprints in limited editions; the processes of wood engraving, screenprinting and lithography feed into her practice, allowing her to explore a variety of surface qualities. Collage provides a further opportunity to extend her ideas and themes in mixed media.
She explores subjects through sketches and photographs, focusing on and simplifying the important elements of the image in order to create a strong composition.
Engaging closely with the printing process, she layers several blocks of line, colour and texture to create a series of proofs, using semi-transparent inks in subtle colours. Negotiating the balance between these layers leads to the gradual realization of her images.
