Hilke MacIntyre was born 1964 in Germany and studied at the College for Art & Architecture in Kiel. After a diploma in architecture she worked for various architects until she moved to Scotland in 1995 and concentrated on art. Since then she has focused on printmaking, painting and ceramics, combining a simplified figurative style with bold shapes, strong colours and abstract patterns.
Her paintings, linocuts and ceramic reliefs are exhibited in galleries throughout Britain. Her work has been selected many times for the annual show at the Royal Scottish Academy.
The ceramic reliefs are made in editions of 50. The original design is carved in clay from which a mould is taken with casting plaster. New slabs of soft clay can then be pressed into the mould to get an almost identical relief which gets signed and carefully dried. After a first firing on lower temperature each relief is glazed by hand and fired in the kiln for a second time. The second firing is close to stoneware temperature which makes the reliefs frost proof and suitable for outside display.
All reliefs have an edition number and a recessed hole in the back for hanging.
