Using 3” oak slabs, Neil can deeply adze out the wood to create a ‘one size fits all’ seat.
Neil employs an Adze to create the unique shape of the seats as well as utilising an axe, drawknife and shavehorse.
Neil uses local seasoned Oak and Ash as the materials alongside metals such as Gold leaf, brass and solder to highlight the profiles of his pieces. The end product combines comfort, elegance and function.
For the pieces with darker seats and legs, Neil uses wirewool (iron) and vinegar (acid), from which he is able to produce the blue/black colours in his work simply by allowing the natural chemistry of the tannin in Oak to react with them.
Neil was born in 1971 in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset. After an Art Foundation course (1987-89) he took a degree in Ceramics at West Surrey college of Art & Design. In 1995 he completed an eight-month Greenwood working apprenticeship at Clissett Wood near Ledbury, Herefordshire. This was followed by helping to work on the Balusters at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, London.
Neil’s career went on to become one of intuitive learning and exploration. He has used two workshops within the beautiful settings of Herefordshire and the Border counties, and has gained much local recognition. Having established his business in 1998, he now has a workshop at his home near the Malvern Hills.
