Margaret’s work is mainly thrown, porcelain and stoneware, for domestic use and visual enjoyment. Her vapour-glaze is a cocktail of salt, soda and stannous chloride creating a lustrous, rainbow finish.
In 1976 Margaret trained at Harrow attending a Studio Pottery Course under tutors Colin Pearson, Wally Keeler, Mo Jupp, Mike Dodd, Mick Casson and Richard Slee. This developed in her a strong interest in salt-firing.
She then went on to do the Pottery Training Workshop at Dartington and was one of the first trainees at their working under Peter Starkey & Peter Cook. She spent her time doing repetition throwing and firing salt kilns. Here she made private sales to The Cider Press Gallery and The Casson Gallery. Her claim to fame was the sale of a lidded store jar which was purchased for the Wenger Collection and also a cutsided store jar purchased for The Bill Ismay Collection.
In 1978 Margaret set up her own workshop in Chiswick, taking pots to Wiltshire to fire in Joanna Stills’ salt kiln. She was then selling to liberty’s in London and Macey’s in New York.
In 1982 Margaret set up her workshop in Bishop’s Stortford and with the help of The Enterprise Allowance Award built a 50cu ft salt kiln.
From 1989 she has spent time teaching in schools and running classes for children and adults at her workshop.
She has a love for textures: lace, peacock feathers, shells and shiny things and adores the process of evolving these into her ceramics.
