Karlin studied glass and ceramics at Stourbridge College of Art in the mid sixties. He was one of the first glass makers to set up his own furnace and studio in the early seventies when he moved to Herefordshire. He soon became an established glass maker in the British Glass world and was made Chairman of British Artists in Glass.
At this time he also taught glass at Bristol Polytechnic while helping his wife Greta set up a Waldorf Kindergarten, which is now a thriving Steiner Academy with over 300 children.
“The Glass I make is no more or less than what you see: the magic of this transparent material caught in a decorative object. My inspiration comes almost exclusively from working with glass. It leads; I follow as best I can. If glass gives me a living and the people who buy it some pleasure, what more could I want.’
He has exhibited his glass in some of the country’s finest collections, including British Craft Council, Victoria and Albert, Dudley Glass Museum and the Dan Klein & Alan J Poole Private Collection which is now housed at the National Museums Scotland, in Edinburgh.
Karlin also creates quirky sculptures in steel – combining it with glass.
