James was born in Edinburgh in 1947.  He graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art, specialising in furniture and 3-D design, but always maintained his practise of art with a bias towards landscape and the female form, having had the benefit of art training from Sir Robin Philipson and Dame Elizabeth Blackadder.   Following graduation, James continued his studies at Edinburgh with a postgraduate diploma in furniture, followed by a Masters Degree from the Royal College of Art, London
After a successful career in furniture and interior design in London and the Middle East, James and his family moved to Herefordshire with their horses, dogs & cats and rekindled his love of painting.
He has exhibited in Edinburgh, West Midlands, and the West Country, whilst teaching art and design.
Since retiring from teaching, James is painting full time, inspired by the countryside he lives in and his journeys around the world.
His works include landscapes in soft and oil pastels, watercolours, and oil paintings, along with charcoal and pencil figurative drawings.
